Trials in Flight

Every goose takes a turn at the point. Galen has several good reasons not to.

When young Canada goose Galen leaves Lake Simcoe on his first migration, he expects long days in the sky and a few uncomfortable turns near the front of the V. He is less prepared for the weather, predators, hunters, and losses that can change the shape of a flock.

The journey carries Galen and his companions toward Plum Island. Through winter, danger, friendship, and the slow return of spring, he begins to understand his place within the changing flock.

About the author

Mark St Jean

Mark is a writer and wildlife photographer from Nottingham, New Hampshire. Trials in Flight grew from years of watching the birds and animals of Parker River—and from a photograph that raised a deceptively simple question: how do geese decide who flies in front?

That question became Galen’s story.
