A New Hampshire writer and wildlife photographer, drawn to the stories that begin when we stop and pay attention.

The person behind the story

Mark St Jean

Mark is a New Hampshire writer, wildlife photographer, musician, and lifelong observer of the natural world. The mountains, coastlines, rivers, forests, and changing seasons of Massachusetts and New Hampshire have shaped much of what he creates.

Trials in Flight grew from watching the birds and animals of Parker River National Wildlife Refuge—and from a photograph that raised a deceptively simple question: how do geese decide who flies in front?

That question became Galen’s story. Alongside the book, the Trials in Flight Wildlife Literacy Project is taking shape; more about it will be shared as it grows. Book Two is underway and will be published next year.

The photographs and field notes around the novel keep the real wildlife and places that inspired it in view.
